Abstract:
The Instrument Development for Oceanology (I-Do) Lab is a multidisciplinary group supported by Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, CAS. Our mission is to develop novel instrumentation for ocean observation. We have particular interests in developing optical instruments for observing essential biogeochemistry and biology variables. Marine plankton play important role in ocean productivity and carbon cycling, and are sensitive to anthropogenic impacts ranging from coastal eutrophication to ocean acidification and global climate change. Their observation and quantitation is of fundamental significance for oceanographyresearchand marine environment monitoring. However, current marine plankton observation still relies heavily on traditional manual net sampling and optical microscopy, which have long been notoriously slow and labour intensive. Developing automated and intelligent approaches for this task is an urgent need for scientists to carry out more prompt and efficient analysis of seawater samples in the field. In recent years, the speaker has involved the development of some new machine vision methods for this purpose. These include high-throughput phytoplankton imaging flow cytometer and underwater plankton camera. Dr. Li will report the R&D progress of these new technologies from I-do.
