Hsiao-Hwa Chen , the Distinguished Professor of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, paid a visit to the School of Information Science and Engineering(ISE) from Aug. 27 to Aug. 30, under the invitation of Professor Dongfeng Yuan, the Dean of ISE. He gave a lecture named “Chip-Level Space-Time Coding and its Applications in MIMO Systems” to the students and teachers of ISE.

In his lecture, Prof. Chen firstly introduced the history and evolution of the traditional CDMA and MIMO technique. Then the characteristics and limitations of symbol-level space-time (SLST) coding schemes were presented to show that the performance of traditional uncoded space-time coding scheme could be improved by utilizing a novel joint coding method, i.e. chip-level space-time coding (CLST) both in 2D and 3D. Two methods for constructing the CLST coding were introduced subsequently and experiment results were given to justify the performance improvement by the CLST over traditional SLST method. The students and teachers who attended the lecture had detailed discussion with Prof. Chen on their academic interest.

After the lecture, Prof. Chen visited the Wireless Mobile Communication and Transmission (WMCT) Laboratory. He gave a highly appraise to the project of Rainbow sponsored by ISE of Shandong Universtiy and the Software Radio Platform produced by the WMCT Lab.

Another forum was hold by Prof. Chen with some Ph.D students of ISE. Some research topics were discussed and lots of useful comments were given by Prof. Chen. He also answered lots of questions from students about how to do research.

Hsiao-Hwa Chen (hshwchen@ieee.org) is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Engineering Science, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from Zhejiang University, China, and a PhD degree from the University of Oulu, Finland, in 1982, 1985 and 1991, respectively. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Wiley’s Security and Communication Networks Journal (http://www.interscience.wiley.com/security). Currently, he is also serving as the Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Wireless Communications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of IET and a Fellow of BCS.
