Institute of Optical Materials and Optical Devices
Considering the development of science and technology, especially that of communication, a determination that optical communication should be one of the four chief research fields was made at the beginning of the establishment of the school. The optical communication group was therefore built in terms of the requirement for the research in this field and a few faculties with the experience of, or relatedto, optical communication were gathered to start optical communication oriented research. The Institute of Optical Communication was established by the school in April, 2004 and the group was formed with Professor Ren Quan as the director and was renamed the Institute of Optical Materials and Optical Devices in 2009. There are five professors, four associate professors and three lecturers in the institute. The research programs cover polymer-based waveguides, waveguides formed by ion implantation, fiber polarization mode dispersion compensation, optical waveguide geodesic lens, optical transport in waveguides and some other related contents. Four projects are funded by National Natural Science Foundation and two are funded Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province. Besides, a project is carried out by cooperating with Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Meanwhile, the faculties also give courses to both undergraduate and graduate students, including Technology of Optical Fiber Communication, Optical Fiber Communication Experiments, Physics of Optoelectronic Devices and Theory and Technology of Optical Waveguide, etc.
