Abstract: Ultra-dense network (UDN) represents a new paradigm of network architecture designed to meet the explosively growing demands of wireless traffics. UDN uses a large number of densely deployed remote access points (RAPs)to provide services to user equipment (UE). In UDN, the network architecture is shifted from traditional cell-centric to user-centric, where  each  UE  can  be  served  by  many  low  power  RAPs, with  the  density  of  RAPs  higher  than  that  of  UEs.  The RAPs are connected to a central unit (CU) through optical fiber links, which make up a large portion of the cost and energy consumption of the network due to the large number of RAPs deployed in the network. Network densification with aggressive spectrum reuse can significantly improve area spectral efficiency (ASE) of the network. On the other hand the energy efficiency (EE) of UDNs might be negatively affected due to strong mutual interference from the RAPs and the large energy consumption of the optical front-haul links. We study the joint optimum design of both the optical links and wireless links by considering the complete signal path across both the optical and wireless domains. Different optical transmission technologies, such as baseband-over-fiber, intermediate-frequency-over-fiber (IFoF), and radio-frequency-over-fiber (RFoF), are quantitatively compared under the context of UDN by considering a large number of practical system parameters. It is shown that RFoF is more suitable for the optical front haul of UDN.
